About the Livability Initiative
More than 3,500 residents shared their ideas about what they would like to stay the same as well as what they would like to be different in their communities.
The Planning Process
The Livability Initiative began as a three-year regional planning process, which provided an opportunity for New River Valley residents to develop a vision for the future and develop strategies that businesses, community organizations, local governments, and individuals can use to make this future vision a reality.
The planning process began in the summer of 2011 and concluded in early 2014. Over this 3 year period, more than 3,500 residents shared their ideas about what they would like to stay the same as well as what they would like to be different in their communities. The concerns and priorities expressed by each community and county influenced the development and prioritization of goals and strategies that are presented in the final plan.
The final Livability plan identifies ways to increase regional self-reliance and prosperity, save tax dollars, increase support for local businesses, support and revitalize existing communities, offer more choices in housing and transportation, improve community health, and protect the region’s rural character, natural environment and scenic beauty.
Livability in Action
The Initiative is now in the “Livability in Action” phase, where community partners and individuals from around the region are working to bring the vision, goals, and strategies outlined in the plan to life. The Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) and the NRV Regional Commission (NRVRC) are proud to be leading partners in supporting implementation of the Livability Initiative’s many goals and strategies. The partnership will continue to convene the community around critical issues, support collaboration, track progress on key indicators, and identify the resources needed to move vision to action.
On this website, you will find many resources and ideas generated both during the planning process, as well as during the on-going implementation phase. Please take the time to get inspired, learn more about, and contribute to the partnerships, projects and initiatives underway in the region which are contributing to the vision and goals of the Livability Initiative!
