Floyd County held its third annual Agriculture & Forestry Information session in July. The state meat inspector, Barry Jones, provided an overview of the basic rules to slaughtering & butchering livestock and the exemptions available to certain small-scale operations. Danny Neel, a marketing specialists with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), spoke about the Southwest Virginia Farmer’s market and ways VDACS can help farmers market their food products. Jon Vest, Floyd County’s extension agent spoke about the ever-increasing standards of “Good Agricultural Practices,” which are necessary if farmers want to expand their businesses and sell produce to anyone other than the end user of the food.
