This fall the Community Foundation of the NRV, New River Health District and Virginia Cooperative Extension hosted two community conversations focused on food access and hunger relief in the NRV. 35 NRV organizations working to relieve hunger participated in one or both of the sessions held at Plenty Farm and Food Bank in Floyd and Micah’s Backpack in Montgomery County. At these sessions participants shared best practices and innovative approaches as well as their challenges. They also started to explore ways to expand access to healthy food and increase collaboration between organizations. A regional resource guide, which catalogs NRV hunger relief programs and the support they offer is now being prepared. An editable draft is accessible, here. Additional sessions are also being planned for 2017, including a volunteer food safety training, opportunities for nutrition education, and an asset inventory to examine available and needed infrastructure to support regional hunger relief efforts.
