GiveLocalNRV, a project of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV), is a one-stop shop for giving easily and securely online to New River Valley nonprofits. Established in 2014 as GiveBigNRV, the CFNRV rebranded and expanded the capabilities of the site in 2019 to support more charitable giving year-round.

The site was host to the 7th Annual Online Giving Day on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 helping over 80 nonprofits across the New River Valley raise money and draw attention to the important work they do for the region. The event exceeded its $325,000 fundraising goal, bringing in $415,221 from nearly 1900 unique donors.  In the seven years of the program to date, the giving day has raised over $1.6 million for nonprofits across the region.

In addition to funds raised from individuals, the CFNRV awards incentive grants to help nonprofits publicize the day and encourage giving. In 2020, the CFNRV awarded $10,000 to twelve organizations, including awards for the largest number of unique donors by county, two superstars, most money raised, a grant for the best video and power hours awards.

Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley had great success during the giving day and shared how excited they were to receive the $1,000 video grant this year. Executive Director, Linda Jilk says “We are so very grateful to the Community Foundation of the NRV for initiating this community day of giving and for implementing so many effective strategies – from non-profit assistance, guidance, problem-solving and enthusiastic support to GiveLocalNRV marketing and incentive prizes – that were a catalyst to our fundraising success. We are a small non-profit that can have a big impact thanks to the funds raised through GiveLocalNRV!”

In addition to the annual giving day, nonprofits use GiveLocalNRV year-round to collect donations and host virtual fundraising events. It provides an easy way for those with limited staff and IT capacity to easily tell their stories and collect donations online. For the CFNRV, it’s one of the many tools offered to support nonprofit leaders, especially during COVID-19. Jessica Wirgau, the CFNRV’s Executive Director, notes how critical these tools have been this year. “As nonprofits were gearing up for the online giving day in June, they were also having to cancel in-person fundraisers, navigate an increased demand for their services, and ensure that their work continued unabated while keeping staff, clients, and volunteers safe. Knowing that GiveLocalNRV could, in part, replace some of the lost revenue and support organizations at a critical point in 2020 was extremely meaningful to us at the CFNRV. We hope donors will continue to visit the site year-round to support these essential organizations.” Beyond GiveLocalNRV, the CFNRV awarded over $76,000 in COVID-Response Grants from April to June, has hosted monthly nonprofit listening sessions to help organizations navigate the pandemic, and will award an additional $100,000 this fall as part of its annual Responsive Grant Program.
