Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley began building their largest project to-date this past summer, a townhouse complex on Church Street in Blacksburg. It will be comprised of seven units. Each unit is 1588 sq. ft. and has three bedrooms and two and a half baths. The units on each end of the complex are ADA accessible and have a bedroom on the main floor.
Of the seven units, four are still available. The homes will sell for $150,000.
“These homes are built to Earth Craft standards which means they will be highly energy efficient. They will provide energy and water savings and have healthier indoor air quality. These standards generally reduce maintenance and utility costs for the homeowner,” says Dan Crowder, Construction Manager.
Habitat uses donated land, materials and volunteer hours to keep the cost of housing down, making it possible for qualifying families to have an affordable mortgage. This allows more available funds for things like health care and education.
“This project was made possible by many key players,” says Kim Snider, Outreach Director. The Blacksburg Presbyterian Church donated the land for the project. The NRV HOME Consortium program contributed $828,000 through its allocation of HUD funds. The NRV community donated the equivalent of $600,000, which includes consulting and design by the Gaines Group architecture firm. The Blacksburg Methodist Church also contributed $50,000. “We are so grateful to the people and businesses who have supported us in this endeavor,” Snider added.
“This project will be completed by the end of 2020 and then we move to Floyd to for a similar project,” added Crowder. For more information on donating or volunteering, visit habitatnrv.org.
