In April, the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech and a local citizens’ group, Sustainable Blacksburg received state-level recognition by winning a Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for their decade-long partnership on Sustainability Week – an annual slate of events designed to promote environmental awareness and action across the community through educational sessions and hands-on demonstrations.
With a guiding mission of “Celebrate-Educate-Motivate”, every Sustainability Week offers innovative ideas and exemplary practices, while providing participants with realistic and practical steps to integrate sustainability into every facet of their day-to-day lives.
Members of this core planning team come from every part of our community: university students, retirees, professionals, professors, even high-school students. The partnership is also cross-sectoral, drawing upon volunteers from local government, the nonprofit sector, the university, local public schools, and local businesses. The partnership strives to create a mix of events each year that touch upon the key sectors where environmentally conscious choices can have a big impact in fostering a sustainable future: energy, transportation, housing, consumption, disposal, food, and land use.
The 11th Annual Sustainability Week will kick off this year on Saturday, September 16 with a bike parade led by Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam. To learn more about the 30+ events planned for this, please visit: http://sustainableblacksburgva.org/events/sustainability-week-2017
