The second-largest hospital in Gaza, the Nasser Hospital, was shut down last week following a week of siege and a raid, according to a United Nations agency.

According to WHO officials, the damage around the hospital is “unimaginable” and they are worried about the 130 or so sick and injured people and 15 medical staff who are still inside.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed its concern about the health and safety of patients and health professionals who are still in the hospital, and warned that further disruption of life-saving care for the ill and injured could result in more deaths, according to a post on the X social media platform.

It said that efforts are being made to move the remaining patients. It also said that the site has no power or running water, and that medical waste and rubbish are creating a “breeding ground” for disease.

According to the Palestinian health authorities, the situation has deteriorated to a “catastrophic state” and Israeli forces have effectively turned the area into a “military barracks”. They said that the lives of those still in the area are in danger.

Hamas, an Islamist group that has ruled Gaza since 2007, denies using hospitals as a front for its operations. It accuses Israel of using its accusations as a smokescreen to destroy the health care system.
